CMYK vs RGB: Why Your Colors Shift in Print
You designed something in glowing neon on your screen, and the printed piece came back a little… calmer. That's not a printing mistake — it's the difference between how screens and presses make color. Here's what's happening and how to control it.
Screens add light. Presses add ink.
RGB (red-green-blue) mixes light — your screen glows, so it can hit electric neons. CMYK (cyan-magenta-yellow-black) mixes ink on paper, which reflects light instead of emitting it. Ink simply can't glow, so the very brightest RGB colors calm down when converted to CMYK.
Which colors shift the most
Vivid greens, electric blues, and hot neon oranges/pinks shift the most. Deep, natural, and muted colors translate almost perfectly. If a color looks like it belongs on a highlighter, expect a small shift.
How to keep control
- Design in CMYK mode when your software allows it — you'll see print-accurate color as you work.
- Avoid relying on pure RGB neons for critical brand colors.
- Use CMYK or Pantone values for exact brand matching.
