Who uses hang tags (and why)

A hang tag is the small card attached to a product that tells the buyer what it is, who made it and what it costs. Retail shops use them for pricing and branding on gift items and home goods. Apparel brands hang them on tees, hoodies and hats so a folded shirt on a table still carries a name and a size. Makers and craft-fair vendors use them to tell the story behind handmade work — the materials, the process, the care instructions — which is often what turns a browser into a buyer. Candle and soap makers loop them around a jar neck or a gift bundle to list the scent, burn time or ingredients. In every case the tag does a job a sticker can't: it adds a second surface for information, feels more premium in the hand, and can be removed cleanly once the item is sold or gifted.

What drives hang tag cost

Three things push hang tag prices up compared with business cards. Finishing labor: drilling a hole and stringing each tag is extra handling, and most online printers typically charge for it separately or leave stringing to you. Stock: a tag has to survive being handled, tugged and shipped, so a thin card won't do; 16PT is thick enough to feel premium and hold up on a rack. Shipping: on small, finished runs, shipping can be a big share of the bill at checkout. Our $149 for 500 includes the drilling, the string and the shipping, plus a free pro file check and a free digital proof. Nothing is charged until you approve that proof, and if we get it wrong, we reprint it. Need a shape, size or quantity outside that tier? Ask for a custom quote.

What to put on a hang tag

Front: your logo and brand name, big enough to read from a step away, plus one short line that says what makes the product yours (“Hand-poured soy wax” or “Printed and sewn in small batches”). Back: the practical details — product name or style, size, price or a space to write one, care or use instructions, and your website or social handle so a happy buyer can reorder. A QR code linking to your shop works well on the back if it's at least about 0.75 inch square. Keep the hole in mind: leave a clear margin around the drill point so it doesn't punch through text or your logo. If prices change often, leave a blank area for a handwritten price or a small price sticker rather than printing it, so one run of 500 lasts through several price updates.

Choosing a hang tag size

Most hang tags typically fall somewhere between a business-card footprint and a slightly taller rectangle. Smaller tags suit candles, jewelry and small gifts, where a big tag would overwhelm the product. Taller tags suit apparel and bags, where there's room for sizing, care details and a brand story. Before you design, hold a mock-up — even a piece of cut cardboard — against the actual product and check that the tag reads at a glance without covering anything important. Then set up your file at the final size with 1/8 inch of bleed and keep text inside the safe zone. Not sure which size fits your product? Contact us with what you're tagging and we'll confirm the size and quote anything outside the standard 500-tag run.

Hang tags vs. stickers vs. printed labels

Hang tags aren't the only way to brand a product, and they aren't always the right one. Die-cut stickers are better for sealing packaging, branding jar lids or labeling flat surfaces; they start at $109 for 250 at 2 inches. Hang tags win when you need two sides of information, when the item is fabric or has a handle or neck to loop a string through, or when you want the product to feel giftable. Many makers use both: a sticker to seal the bag and a tag on the item inside. If you sell at craft fairs or pop-up markets, a tag also works as a take-home business card, because buyers keep it with the product and can find your shop again later. Pairing tags with matching business cards and stickers keeps your branding consistent from the table to the shopping bag.

Frequently asked questions

How much do custom hang tags cost?

At i Can Print That, 500 full-color 16PT hang tags, drilled and strung, cost $149 with shipping included. That's about 30 cents per tag.

Are hang tags sold with the string attached?

Ours are. The $149 for 500 price includes drilling the hole and attaching the string, so the tags arrive ready to hang on products.

What information goes on a product hang tag?

Put your logo and a short brand line on the front. On the back, list the product name, size or scent, care instructions, price or a blank price space, and your website or a QR code.

What thickness should a hang tag be?

A thick card stock holds up to handling and display better than thin paper. Our hang tags are printed on 16PT stock, which feels premium and resists bending on a rack or a jar.

Can I get a different size or quantity of hang tags?

Yes, but anything outside the standard 500-tag run is a custom quote. Contact us with your product and size, and every order still includes a free file check and a free proof before you pay.
